Brittanys in Obedience

The American Kennel Club offers the following titles in obedience competition. Other organizations such as the United Kennel Club and Canadian Kennel Club offer these titles, but may have slightly different requirements to earn the same title.

CGC-Canine Good Citizen: To earn the CGC the dog must pass 10 exercises as required by AKC in a pass/fail evaluation. This is the easiest degree of obedience and is recognized by AKC but can be earned by non-registered or mix breed dogs.

CD-Companion Dog: Must pass all exercises of Novice Obedience with at least a score of 170 out of 200 points, and ½ the points of each exercise. Each passing leg (test) must be judged by a different judge.

Heel on lead; figure 8 on lead; stand for exam off lead; heel off lead; recall across the ring; 1 minute sit stay, 3 minute down stay, must be at least 6 dogs in the ring, handlers in the ring.

CDX-Companion Dog Excellent: Must pass all exercises of Open Obedience with 170 out of 200 as above, ½ the points of each exercise, each leg under 3 different judges.

Heel off lead; figure 8 off lead; drop on recall; retrieve on the flat; retrieve over the high jump; broad jump; 3 minute sit stay, 5 minute down stay, at least 6 dogs in the ring, handlers out of the ring and out of sight.

UD-Utility Dog: Passing all exercises of Utility Obedience, same as above for 3 legs under three different judges.

Signal exercise (heel off lead with stand stay, drop, sit and recall all done with signals only); article discrimination, one metal and one leather article each scented by handler and found among 8 others in a pile (metal and leather done separately); directed retrieve of one glove out of three, glove chosen by judge; moving stand; directed jumping, dog is sent across the ring and directed to jump either the bar or high jump as ordered by the judge (both jumps will be jumped).

UDX-Utility Dog Excellent: Must pass both Open and Utility exercises on the same day 10 time to earn this degree.

OTCH-Obedience Dog Champion: Must accumulate 100 points, each point earned by number of dogs defeated (1-4). Must have 3 first places, one in Open, one in Utility, the third in either, all under separate judges.
